Syllabus

1. To study the static characteristics of SCR, MOSFET, IGBT .
2. To study the Pulse converter and 1-Ø half controlled bridge converter with R & R-L load .
3. To study the 1-Ø full controlled bridge converter with R & R-L load .
4. To study the 3-Ø half controlled bridge converter with R & R-L load .
5. To study the open loop and close loop response of DC-DC Buck converter .
6. To study the open loop and close loop response of DC-DC Boost converter .
7. To study the open loop and close loop response of DC-DC Buck-Boost converter .
8. To study the single phase IGBT based PWM inverter .
9. To study a Voltage commutated chopper circuit with it’s time-ratio control .
10. To study the speed control of 3-Ø induction motor using IGBT based PWM inverter .
11. To study the closed loop speed control of a DC-motor by tachogenerator feedback method .
12. To study the operation of 3-Ø voltage source inverter .

Course Objectives

  • To understand the characteristics of different power semiconductor devices and their practical applications in power electronics converters.
  • To provide introduction to operating principles, characteristics and performance of various power electronics converters for different operating conditions.
  • To familiarize students with power electronics converter based open- and closed-loop motor drives to control the speed of electrical machines.
  • To expose students to open- and closed-loop control of power electronics converters, measurements, and circuit connections.

Course Outcomes

At the end of the course, students will be able to <br />1. Recognize the practical application of the power electronics theory course EE2202 - Power Electronics. <br />2. Understand the characteristics differences between various power electronics devices and their limitations in practical applications. <br />3. Applying different experimental techniques using suitable apparatus to assess the performance characteristics of various power electronics converters at various operating conditions. <br />4. Understand the speed control techniques of three-phase induction motor and dc motor using power electronics converters and analyze their speed control characteristics. <br />5. Practice various electrical circuit connections acknowledging practical, and safety aspects. <br />6. Evaluate and investigate the possible causes of discrepancies in experimental results and observations, in comparison with the theory. <br />7. Prepare laboratory reports of professional quality presenting graphical representations of laboratory data necessary waveform and the calculations.
