Syllabus

Electrochemistry: Redox reactions, Electrode potential, Electrochemical cells, Batteries and Fuel Cells, Applications of Electrochemistry and Numerical problems.
Polymer Chemistry: Introduction, Classification, Synthesis, Characterization, Properties.
Solid State Chemistry: Packing of Solids, Structure of simple binary and ternary compounds, crystal systems, Bravais Lattice, Reciprocal lattice, Crystallographic planes and directions
Spectroscopy: Electromagnetic Radiation and Interaction with matter, Rotational, Vibrational and Electronic Spectroscopy and their applications.
Fuels, classification & properties, Basic of Petroleum refining, Synthetic fuels : Fischer Tropsch process, Bergius process, Chemistry of biodiesel Antiknock agents, Calorific value & determination Composition and uses of Gaseous fuels Fundamentals of Solid fuel/propellant and high energy materials for diverse applications.

Course Objectives

  • To provide a basic level scientific and technical understanding of chemistry to the first year engineering students.
  • To have fundamental level understanding on chemistry of materials used for different energy applications.
  • To understand the synthesis and applications of polymers, solid state materials and fuels.
  • To have understanding on basic spectroscopic techniques and their applications

Course Outcomes

This course aims to provide a basic understanding of chemistry. <br />Students will understand how fundamental chemical principles affect atomic, electronic and electrochemical properties of matter. <br />Students would be able to relate basic chemical principles with materials used in energy applications. <br />Students will be able to identify the relationship between chemistry and industry.
