Syllabus

Module 1: 4 classes
Introduction to various reservoirs, conventional and unconventional reservoirs, inherent properties, production and gas recovery, Coalbed methane (CBM) introduction, worldwide distribution,

Module 2: 8 classes
Coal structure and properties, Classifications of coal with rank, grade, composition and their importance, organic structures, maturity, pore distributions, adsorption, diffusion and fluid flow fundamentals, production and recovery, field patterns and results.

Module 3: 9 classes
Gas storage capacity and Fluid flow: Key factors, detailed discussions, associated tests, gas-in-place and gas content analysis, sorption time, permeability effects, shrinkage and swelling effects. Uncertainty analysis. Examples from various case studies.

Module 4: 9 classes
Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS): Fundamentals, CCS options, geological sequestration technologies, ECBM and CO2 Sequestration: Importance, associated problems. Field drillhole pattern/design, cyclic, non-cyclic and/or continuous injections and their results. Reservoir Simulation.

Module 5: 4 classes
Different test procedures in CBM: Proximate and Petrographic analysis, Isotherm test, Desorption canister test. Gas Injection and Displacement.

Course Objectives

  • To understand the structures of unconventional reservoir like CBM, storage and transport properties, production cycles.
  • To understand the experimental methods for gas recovery in laboratory and design and simulation techniques for field studies.

Course Outcomes

CO1: Identify and understand the factors influencing performance of coal bed methane <br />CO2: Analyze design requirement of methane estimation, gas-water separation, transport etc <br />CO3: Know about the field design concepts for the production and gas recovery.
