Syllabus

1. Hardness measurement of metallic materials using Vickers, Rockwell and Brinell hardness testing
machines
2. Microhardness testing of two and / or multiphase alloy systems
3. Tensile tests of low carbon steel (annealed), high carbon steel (annealed) and a non-ferrous alloy
4. Development of true stress – true strain diagram/s using tensile data and determination of strain
hardening exponent
5. Compression testing of ceramics, powder metallurgy specimens
6. Three – point bend test of non – metallic materials
7. Impact testing of steels / non – ferrous alloys / non – metallic materials
8. Wear studies of different carbon steels
9. To develop S – N curve of a metallic specimen
10. Plane strain fracture toughness (K-IC) test of a brittle material.

Course Objectives

  • Understanding the Experimental techniques associated with deformation of materials
  • Different semi-destructive and destructive tests

Course Outcomes

1. Students will be able to learn the conduction of various mechanical testing procedure. <br />2. Students can analyze a large data set and develop different adherent mechanical properties. <br />3. Students will be able to write a scientific report <br />4. Students can choose a perfect material for a certain application <br />5. Students will be able to understand the importance of working in a group <br />6. Students will be able to handle small to large equipment by taking proper care.
