Syllabus

Vector Analysis: Gradient, Divergence, Curl, Vector rules Line, surface and volume integration, Gauss divergence theorem and Stoke's theorem.
Electromagnetic wave : Gauss law in electrostatics, divergence and curl of static Electric field, Biot-Savart's law & Ampere's law, electromagnetic induction, Faraday’s law Maxwell's equations in vacuum & media, boundary conditions on electric & magnetic fields, Eelectromagnetic waves in vacuum and media.
Quantum Mechanics : Black body radiation, photoelectric effect, X-ray diffraction, Compton Effect, pair production, Particle nature of wave, Particle diffraction, Wave nature of particle, de Broglie waves, group waves, phase velocity & group velocity, Schrödinger Equation, Particle in a box.
Band theory of solids : Free electron theory, Fermi energy, density of states, Electrons in periodic potentials, Bloch Theorem, Kronig-Penney model. Concept of Band gap, effective mass, Electron vs. Hole.
