Course Details

Subject {L-T-P / C} : CE3001 : Estimation and Construction Management { 3-0-0 / 3}

Syllabus

Module I: Methods of Estimation: Units of measurements, Types of estimation: Different methods of approximate estimation, Detailed estimate: Long wall-short wall method, Centre line method. Estimation of earthwork, Sanitary and water supply works, Irrigation works, Road works.
Module II: Reinforcement Quantity Estimation: Reinforcement quantity estimation from Bar Bending Schedule (BBS), BBS of beam, column, one way & two way slab, isolated foundation.
Module III: Specifications: General specification, Details specification for different building items structural works.
Module IV: Analysis of Rate: Analysis of rates for Earth work, Cement concrete, RCC, Brickwork, plastering, etc.
Module V: Contracts & Tendering: Different methods of carrying out work contract system, Contract document, Types of contract, measurement book and Method of tendering.
Module VI: Construction Project Management: Project Planning, Project Scheduling, Project Controlling, Bar charts & Milestone charts, Development of Network, Network analysis, Network rules, Work Breakdown Structure and Elements of PERT and CPM.

Course Objectives

  • This subject aims to develop an understanding of principles and techniques of estimating construction costs of different structures like building, sanitary and water supply works, irrigation works, road works etc.
  • To make student familiar with the techniques of calculation of rates of different essential items of a construction project.
  • To familiarize students with the specifications of materials, equipments and construction methodologies of different construction works.
  • The course also covers the basic principles, techniques, and practices used as management tools by contractors to plan, schedule, and control time and costs on various infrastructure projects.

Course Outcomes

1. Students will learn to estimate the quantities of materials and costs for different items of a construction projects like building projects, irrigation works, road works etc. <br />2. Students can perform the rate analysis for the various construction activities. <br />3. Students will be able to prepare the contract documents for a given project. <br />4. Students can apply various material & equipment management techniques in a project. <br />5. Students will be able to perform the project planning, scheduling, time-cost optimization, resource allocation and project controlling.
