Syllabus

Module 1: Introduction to Wireless Communication Systems [4 hrs.]
Evolution, Mobile Systems around the World, Example of the mobile radio systems, Recent trends, 2G, 3G and 4G Cellular networks.
Module 2: The Cellular Concept [5 hrs.]
Frequency reuse, Channel assignment, Hand off process, Types of Interference, Cellular capacity
Module 3: Mobile Radio Propagation [5 hrs.]
Path loss, Radio wave propagation, Reflection, Diffraction, Scattering, Link budget Design, Outdoor and indoor propagation models
Module 4: Principle of multi-path propagation [5 hrs.]
Impulse response model of channels, parameters for mobile multi-path channels, the concept of fading, Rayleigh and Ricean fading, Simulation of fading channels.

Pulse shaping, Linear and non-linear Modulation techniques, constant envelop modulation, QPSK, MSK, GMSK. Spread spectrum modulation techniques - Direct sequence and Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum and their applications.
Module 6: Equalization, Diversity and Channel coding [6 hrs.]
Fundamentals of equalization, General adaptive equalizer, Linear and non-linear equalizers, diversity techniques, RAKE receivers, Basic concept of coding.
Module 7 Multiple access techniques [5 hrs.]
Introduction, FDMA, TDMA, CDMA, SDMA, the capacity of cellular systems
Module 8: Introduction to Multicarrier systems [5 hrs.]
OFDM and wireless LAN, WiMAX, GSM, WCDMA, 3GPP LTE and other 4G standards.

Course Objectives

  • Understand various mobile standards from 1G to 5G
  • To develop skills in the link budget design of the cellular system.
  • To analyze the effects of small-scale fading and large-scale path loss.
  • To understand the modulation and multiple access techniques used for cellular systems.

Course Outcomes

1) Understanding the basics of mobile and wireless communication and solving various types of problems. <br />2) Apply theory for analyzing a practical problem related to the mobile communication system. <br />3) Application of large-scale and small-scale channel models for the design of mobile communication systems. <br />4) Analyze and design various wireless communication systems.
