Module 1: INTRODUCTION TO IMAGE PROCESSING: Overview of Image Processing, Nature of Image Processing, Image Processing and Related Fields, Digital Image Representation, Types of Images, Digital Image Processing Operations, Fundamental Steps in Image Processing, Image processing Applications, Digital Imaging System.DIGITAL IMAGING SYSTEM: Physical Aspects of Imaging Acquisition, Biological Aspects of Image Acquisition, Review of Digital Camera, Sampling and Quantization, Image Quality, Image Storage and File Formats.

Module 2: IMAGE ENHANCEMENT IN SPATIAL DOMAIN: Some basic gray level transformations, Histogram processing, Smoothing and Sharpening spatial filters, IMAGE ENHANCEMENT IN FREQUENCY DOMAIN: Smoothing and Sharpening frequency domain filters, Homomorphic filtering,

Module 3: IMAGE RESTORATION: Noise models, Restoration in the presence of noise only-spatial filtering, Estimating the degradation functions, Inverse filtering.

Module 4: IMAGE COMPRESSION: Image compression models, Loss-less and Lossy compression, MORPHOLOGICAL IMAGE PROCESSING: Dilation and erosion, Opening and closing, Some basic morphological algorithms, IMAGE SEGMENTATION: Detection of discontinuities, Edge linking and boundary detection, Thresholding, Region based segmentation.

Module 5: COLOUR IMAGE PROCESSING FUNDAMENTALS: Devices for Colour Imaging, Colour Image Storage and Processing, Colour Models, Colour Quantization RECENT DEVELOPMENTS.

Course Objectives

  • Extension of one-dimensional signal processing into two-dimensional signal processing for image analysis.
  • Digital image acquisition and basic operations for image enhancement.
  • To study basic image processing techniquesof spatial and frequency domains for filtering applications..
  • Understanding of image compression and image segmentation. Color image acquisition and processing.

Course Outcomes

CO1:Students will learn how to acquire an image and perform basic image processing operations. <br />CO2: Understanding of image enhancement in both spatial and frequency domains for noise removal and better appearance. <br />CO3: Utility of image compression techniques for storage and transmission purpose. <br />CO4: Thoughtful of image segmentation and its use in object and boundary detection. <br />CO5: To learn aboutcolor imaging, color models, and color image processing.
