Syllabus

Module 1:
Bipolar Junction Transistor: Small Signal model, BJT biasing for discrete circuit design, single stage amplifier analysis, complete static characteristic, internal capacitances and second order effect, differential amplifier using BJT. (10 hrs.)
Module 2:
Field-Effect Transistor: MOSFET as amplifier, biasing of MOS amplifier circuits, single stage IC-MOS amplifiers, MOSFET as analog switch, Small signal model of MOSFET for high and low frequencies. Spice model and analysis of FET circuits, differential amplifier using MOSFET. (10 hrs.)
Module 3:
Frequency Response Analysis: S-domain analysis, Bode plot, amplifier transfer function, low frequency and high frequency response of common-source and common drain amplifiers, Current Mirrors, Cascode Amplifier. (10 hrs.)
Module 4:
Feedback Amplifier: General feed-back structures, negative feedback, the 4 basis feedback topologies and their analysis, close loop gain calculation, Oscillators. (6 hrs.)
Module 5:
Output stage and Power Amplifier: Classification of output stages, Class A, Class B, Class AB amplifiers Differential and Multistage Amplifier: BJT differential amplifier, Small signal operation of BJT differential amplifier, non-ideal characteristics of differential amplifier, multistage amplifiers. Phase Locked Loops: Simple PLL Operation, Applications. (10 hrs.)

Course Objectives

  • To master the fundamentals of analog circuits.
  • To understand Bipolar Junction Transistors and Metal Oxide Semiconductors. <br />To comprehend the necessity of DC biasing of Semiconductor Circuits.
  • To interpret characteristics of Bipolar Junction Transistors and Metal Oxide Semiconductors. <br />To grasp characteristics of Single Stage Amplifier (both BJT and MOSFET).
  • To apprehend characteristics of Feedback and Power amplifier.

Course Outcomes

CO1:Develop the art of analog and mixed-signal integrated design. Make students well-versed with the fundamental building blocks of analog IC. <br />CO2:Explain the structure of Bipolar Junction Transistors and Metal Oxide Semiconductors devices. <br />CO3: Describe the DC and AC characteristics of single-stage amplifier circuits of BJT and MOSFET semiconductor devices using mathematical equations. <br />CO4: Apply the knowledge of single-stage amplifier circuits to illustrate the functioning of the other different complex electronic circuits. <br />CO5: Evaluate and judge analytically the performance of the different electronic circuits and identify the design steps of the different electronic circuits.
