Roadways: Introduction, Road Development plans and programmes Surveys: Location
surveys- Principles of alignment Geometric design: Cross-sectional elements, Sight distance,
Horizontal and vertical alignments, Pavement materials: Subgrade soil, Aggregates,
Bituminous binders, Bituminous paving mixes Flexible pavements design Rigid pavement
design Drainage, evaluation and maintenance of highways Traffic Engineering: Speed,
Volume, Density, Relation among fundamental parameters, Traffic data collection, Capacity
and level of service, Traffic control devices, Road markings, Parking, Roundabout and
signalized intersection design
Course Objectives
- Conversant with road alignment and various parameters required for road geometric design
- Familiar with different types of material used for road construction and their quality assurance
- Analysis and design of layer structures of both flexible and rigid pavement
- Acquire knowledge on traffic studies of data collection procedures, analysis, control measures, capacity and service quality assessment
Course Outcomes
After the completion of this course, students will be able to: <br />CO1: Understand the basic concept of transportation engineering including types of roadways, road development plans and programmes and alignment Surveys <br />CO2: Carry out detail’s studies on horizontal and vertical alignment geometric design of roadways <br />CO3: Able to apply the concept of testing procedures on subgrade soil, road aggregates and bitumen used for mix design in the field <br />CO4: design flexible pavement and rigid pavement evaluate strength of pavement for maintenance <br />CO5: Understand basics of traffic engineering, estimate capacity and level of service of roadways and intersections
