Syllabus

Philosophy of surface, broken bond concept, defects, general applications and requirements.
Surface Degradation: Basic principles of electrochemistry (touch up), Mechanical Friction and Wear like abrasive, erosive and sliding wear etc. Interaction between wear and corrosion.
Surface engineering processes and their types.
Conventional heat treatment processes.
Electro deposition, Flame Spraying, Plasma spray, Physical vapour deposition, Chemical vapour deposition etc.
Laser and plasma techniques
Plastic deformation based surface engineering techniques, new coating concepts including multi-layer structures, functionally gradient materials, intermetallic barrier coatings and thermal barrier coatings. Industrial applications
Surface characterization, case studies

Course Objectives

  • Students will be able to propose surface engineering techniques for target applications
