Syllabus

Optimal problem formulation, Single variable optimization algorithms including interval halving, golden section search , Newton-Raphson method, bisection method etc., Multi variable optimization algorithms including simplex search method Cauchy s steepest descent method, Levenberg Marquardt s method, constrained optimization algorithms including Khun-Tucker conditions. Specialized algorithms including Integer programming, geometric programming. Non-traditional optimization technique like simulated annealing, Differential evolution. Application of the aforesaid techniques in Chemical Engineering designs.

Course Objectives

 • To understand the need and origin of the optimization methods.
 • To formulate constrained and non-constrained optimization problems pertaining to the physical process. Getting optimal solution followed by decision making.
 • To get a broad perspective of the various applications of optimization methods used in process design.
 • Comparison in performance for the traditional and non-traditional optimization techniques.

Course Outcomes

1.To enable the students to formulate optimal problem pertaining to their process/project requirement.
2. To enable the students to take a decision based on the optimal solutions.
3. To enable the students to solve the optimization problems using MATLAB optimization toolbox.
