Syllabus

Module 1: Introduction to Microbiology: Structure of cells, types of cells, classifications of cells.
Module 2: Introduction to biochemistry
Module 3: Fermentation mechanisms and kinetics: Kinetic models of microbial growth and product formation Fermentation types: Batch and continuous fermentation
Module 4: Bioreactors: Types of bioreactors and design
Module 5: Sterilization: Sterilization of media and air, equipment, batch and continuous sterilizer design
Module 6: Biochemical product separation and recovery: Membrane separation process, chromatographic method
Module 7: Introduction to Biochemical process industries: Industrial alcohols, antibiotic, enzymes, vitamins, single cell process

Course Objectives

  • To help the students to have basic knowledge in microbiology and biotechnology,
  • To enable the students to distinguish between chemical reaction engineering and biochemical engineering
  • To help the students to develop expertise to design any biochemical process with applications to bioprocess industries

Course Outcomes

It interweaves bioprocessing with the chemical reaction engineering concepts. It enables the students to understand the reaction engineering approach with ease. It provides basic knowledge in Microbiology, Bioreactor design, Fermentation Technology, Downstream processing and sterilization. The knowledge in this field will help the bioprocess engineers & environmental engineers.
