Syllabus

Uncertainties in Measurements, Probability Distributions (Binomial, Poisson, Gaussian, and Lorentzian Distribution), Error Analysis, Estimates of Mean and Errors, Monte Carlo Techniques, Least­ Squares Fit to a Straight Line, and to a Polynomial, Direct Application of the Maximum­ Likelihood Method, Numerical Methods (Polynomial Interpolation, Differentiation, Integration, Roots of Nonlinear equation, Data smoothing, Solution of Simultaneous Equations by Determinants, Matrix Inversion, Solving differential equations by Euler and Runge­ Kutta methods). Programmings with Fortran 90/95.

Course Objectives

  • To provide an introduction to the techniques of data reduction and error analysis used for the research in physical sciences.

Course Outcomes

Students will gain the theory of data reduction and error Analysis with enough derivations.
