Syllabus
PH 3071: Properties of Matter Laboratory
1. To determine the value of acceleration due to gravity ‘g’ by Kater’s pendulum.
2. To determine the spring constant and effective mass of a given spiral spring.
3. To verify the laws of transverse vibration using Sonometer.
4. To determine experimentally the moment of inertia and the radius of gyration about its center of gravity using bifilar suspension apparatus.
5. To determine the moment of Inertia of a Flywheel about its axis of rotation.
6. To determine Poison’s ratio for rubber.
7. To determine the Young’s modulus of the material of the bar using Cantilever beam arrangement.
8. To determine the modulus of rigidity of the material of the given wire with the help of a torsion table/pendulum.
9. To determine the rigidity modulus of the material of the rod using Searle’s static torsion apparatus.
10. To determine the value of the modulus of rigidity of the material of a given wire by a dynamical method using Maxwell’s needle.
11. To determine the value of modulus of rigidity of the material of a wire by statical method using vertical pattern apparatus (Barton’s apparatus)
Course Objectives
- To provide the concepts for performing different experiments to study various general properties of the matters, recording of experiential data and the analysis of the data.
Course Outcomes
Students will understand the different general properties of the solid materials by doing different experiments.
