Syllabus
Theory of relativity : Relativity: Galilean relativity and Galilean transformation, Special relativity, Michelson Morley experiment and postulates of relativity, length contraction and time dilatation, Doppler effect, Lorentz transformation & velocity addition, relativistic momentum, mass-energy relation.
Statistical Mechanics : Statistical distributions, Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics, molecular energies in ideal gas, quantum statistics: Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac statistics, Rayleigh-Jeans formula, Planck's law of radiation, specific heats of solids, Dulong-Petit’s law, Einstein’s formula, Free electrons in metals
Laser Physics : Coherent time & length, temporal coherence, line width, spatial coherence, Michelson stellar Interferometer, spontaneous and stimulated emission, meta-stable states, optical pumping, population inversion, Einstein approach of stimulated emission, Einstein coefficient, components of laser: optical cavity and resonator, optical amplification, Fiber laser, Ruby and He-Ne lasers.
