Syllabus

Review of the basic concepts of Thermodynamics: First law, second law, Entropy, Thermodynamic relations., Cryogenic Systems: Carnot Liquefaction Cycle, F.O.M. and Yield of Liquefaction Cycles. Inversion Curve - Joule Thomson Effect. Liquefaction Cycles: Linde Hampson Cycle, Precooled Linde Hampson Cycle, Claudes Cycle, Collins Cycle, Dual Pressure Cycle, Helium Regrigerated Hydrogen Liquefaction Systems. Critical components in Liquefaction Systems, Introduction to air separation. Cryogenic Refrigerators: J.T. Cryocoolers, Stirling Cycle Refrigerators, G.M. Cryocoolers, Pulse Tube Refrigerators, Regenerators used in Cryogenic Refrigerators. Applications: Applications of Cryogenic in Space Programmes, Superconductivity, Cryo Metallurgy, Medical applications.

Course Objectives

  • To impact knowledge on cryogenic systems
  • To learn about different process involved for liquefaction and cryocoolers

Course Outcomes

CO1: Understanding the gas liquefaction and refrigeration system <br />CO2: To create engineers to operate and maintain cryogenic plants. <br />CO3: To create scientists and engineer to analyse the existing systems and creation of new systems. <br />CO4: Instrumentation in cryogenic system is essential for measuring properties at low temperature
