Syllabus
Module I: Introduction and design approach: Properties of structural steel, Indian standard specifications and sections, analysis procedures and design philosophy, introduction to limit state design. [4 hours]
Module II: Design of connections: Riveted, Bolted, and welded connections. [8 hours]
Module III: Design of tension members: Types of tension members, design of tension members, lug angles. [5 hours]
Module IV: Design of compression members: Types of compression members, design of axially loaded compression members, built-up columns, lacing, batten. [5 hours]
Module V: Design of column bases: Design of solid slab base, design of gusseted base. [4 hours]
Module VI: Design of beams: Behaviour of steel beams, section classification, web buckling and crippling, deflection, design procedure of rolled beams, design of purlins. [8 hours]
Module VII: Design of plate girder: Elements of plate girder, proportioning of web and flanges, flexural strength, shear strength of web, design of stiffeners. [4 hours]
Course Objectives
- Students will learn the basic concept of designing steel structural elements.
- Students will learn to design riveted, bolted, and welded connections.
- Students will learn to design tension and compression members in steel structures.
- Students will learn to design steel beams and plate girders.
Course Outcomes
After the completion of this course, students will be able to: <br />CO1: Understand the basic concept of designing steel structural elements. <br />CO2: Design the riveted, bolted and welded joints. <br />CO3: Design tension members. <br />CO4: Design compression members and column bases. <br />CO5: Design beams and plate girders.
