History and Overview of Animal Biotechnology, Animal cell and tissue culture: Elements of Aseptic Techniques, Disinfection and Sterilization, Culture of Animal Cell: Sources of animal cells, types of animal cell culture, culture media buffer systems initiation and maintenance of cell cultures growth curve of animal cells in culture animal cell cryopreservation techniques. Large scale animal cell culture. Animal genetic engineering: Introduction to cloning and gene technology, transfection of animal cell lines, Selectable and non-selectable markers, expression of cloned proteins in animal cells. Assisted Reproductive Technology: IVM, IVF, ICSI and PGD, Parthenogenesis in Animals. Animal Cloning and SCNT. Animal Stem Cells - ES Cell, EG Cell, PG Cell, GPS Cells, Adults Stem Cells, Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells, Direct Reprogramming of animal cells. Transgenic Animals: PN Injection, SMGT, SCNT, Viral Vector-mediate transgenesis. Gene Targeting, Xenotrasplantation. Laboratory Animals: Handling, Governing Guidelines, Animal Models. Cryobanking of Sperm, Oocytes and Embryos. MOET. Bioethical issues related to animal biotechnology

Course Objectives

  • • To understand the fundamentals of animal biotechnology for animal cell culture, and their genetic modification.
  • • To apply biotechnology in manipulating animal genome and proteome for human welfare.
  • • To learn the methods of transgenic animal production.

Course Outcomes

• Understand the application of biotechnology in manipulating animal genomes and proteomes for human welfare. <br />• Learn basics of cell and tissue culture, animal genetic engineering, animal transgenics, and assisted reproductive technologies in animals. <br />• Understand and apply the right biotechnology tools for improving animal production and reproduction. <br />• Application of animal biotechnology tools and techniques for the industrial production of pharmaceutical proteins and cell-based products. <br />• Learn and understand the bio-safety issues and government regulations in animal biotechnology.
