Module-1
Introduction, need for passive solar design ,global challenges and environmental concerns, Passive solar basics, Historical evolution
Module-2
Principles of Passive Solar Design
Passive Heating techniques - general principles, direct gain systems, glazed walls, bay windows, attached sun spaces etc. indirect gain systems such as Trombe wall, water wall, solar chimney, trans wall, roof pond, etc. and Isolated gain systems such as Natural convective loop etc.
Module-3
Solar Passive Energy Design systems :Measuring energy efficiency Simulation through the use of computer based applications. (Building Simulation Software: Analysis of data like solar exposure, material costs, resource consumption & acoustic response, Visual analysis of shadows & solar profiles. Simulation of lighting & shadows to analyse energy data to calculate daylight factors, Solar insolation Inter-zonal adjacencies Overall energy requirements)
Module-4
Relevant case studies on modern buildings designed with passive heating techniques.

Course Objectives

  • To enable students to understand and apply the concept of solar energy as a significant determinant of built forms.
  • To enable students to understand the concept of thermal comfort.
  • To create ecological concerns in society and understanding of elements of passive solar design
  • To give Passive solar design solutions for buildings in different climatic zones

Course Outcomes

To be able to design and apply principles of passive solar design to new and existing buildings for environmental conscious solutions.
