Subject {L-T-P / C} : ME6302 : Heat Transfer – II: Convection Heat Transfer { 3-0-0 / 3}

Syllabus
1. Convection: Introduction, Vector analysis, Derivation of energy equation, Couette flow and Poiseuille flow, Various non-dimensional numbers in heat and mass transfer. 6 Hours
2. Forced convection: Convective heat transfer for external and internal flows, Order of magnitude analysis, Thermal boundary layer, Similarity solutions for laminar boundary layer over flat plate, 6 Hours
3. Heat Transfer in circular tubes - Entrance region, Constant heat flux and constant wall temperature solutions with constant and parabolic velocity profiles, the Graetz problem, Lubrication oil temperature rise in rotating shaft. 6 hours
4. Integral methods. Momentum and energy integral equations, Boundary layer over a flat plate with unheated starting length, Turbulent boundary layer, Analogy between momentum and heat transfer. 6 Hours
5. Natural convection: Natural convection from a vertical plate by similarity solution and integral solution, Natural convection in enclosed spaces. Combined forced and free convection. 6 Hours
6. Boiling and Condensation: Pool and flow boiling, Condensation over vertical/inclined surfaces and outside cylinder. 6 Hours
Course Objectives
- To enhance the understanding of convective heat and mass transfer processes and their relevance to industrial problems.
- To strengthen analytical skills and the ability to deal with complex problems, and
- To provide experience in treating multi-mode heat transfer phenomena in solving realistic engineering problems.
Course Outcomes
CO1: To have the basic understanding on convection heat transfer. <br />CO2: Apply the concepts of convection in fluid system in engineering field <br />CO3: Calculate and determine the effect of boundary layer on convection. <br />CO4: Relates the basic theory of laminar and turbulent flow with application of fluid mechanics. <br />CO5: Provides an understanding how the boiling and condensation affect convection.
