Campus Security System
NIT Rourkela has developed an efficient security system. The Security Wing of the Institute has laid down a set of rules and regulations which have to be complied with by all residents and visitors on campus to maintaining a safe, peaceful, and disciplined campus environment. The Security Wing plays a crucial role in protecting people and property on campus, preventing untoward incidents, and ensuring smooth day-to-day functioning.
Organization & 24×7 Operations
- The Security Wing is headed by the coordinated by the Head of Unit – Safety & Security (HOU-SS).
- A 24×7 Duty Room monitors all gates, residential areas, hostels, and academic zones through patrolling and surveillance.
- Security staff are deployed round-the-clock to handle incidents, regulate entry/exit, and assist in emergencies.
Important: NIT Rourkela’s campus falls under the jurisdiction of Sector-3 Police Station. Any major criminal incident or case requiring police cover must be reported to the local police, with parallel intimation to the HOU-SS for internal records and inquiry.
Identity & Access Control
Identity Cards : All employees, students, and residents must carry their Institute ID Card and produce it upon request by security personnel. Temporary Passes : Issued by the Security Wing for:
- Contractors and their employees
- Casual workers and vendors
- Temporary visitors
Daily & Group Passes
- Daily passes are given to casual visitors at the gates.
- Group passes are issued for contractor teams or student groups from other institutions.
- The Security office issues color-coded stickers for two-wheelers and four-wheelers to differentiate residents from non-residents.
- Temporary vehicle passes are also issued upon verification of vehicle documents.
- Gate passes are mandatory for any material or goods moving out of the campus.
Campus Security Guidelines
All residents, students, and visitors must follow these rules:
- Speed Limit: Max 30 km/h for powered vehicles inside campus.
- Driving Age: Persons below 18 years cannot drive motor vehicles.
- No Alcohol in Public: Consumption of alcohol in open/public areas is strictly prohibited.
- No Drugs: Possession, consumption, or trafficking of narcotics is illegal and will be reported to authorities.
- No Open Fires: Lighting fires on campus is not allowed.
- No Poaching or Fishing: Wildlife protection is strictly enforced.
- Noise Discipline: Avoid loud noise, especially in residential zones during night hours.
Residential & Hostel Safety
- Always keep your quarters and hostel rooms locked when not in use.
- Inform Security if your quarter will remain vacant for a long period — this helps in planning patrolling and preventing theft.
- Report any suspicious person, vehicle, or activity immediately.
- Follow hostel visitor timings and register guests as required.
Surveillance & Patrolling
- CCTV cameras are installed at major gates, corridors, and sensitive locations for 24×7 monitoring.
- Security staff conduct foot and vehicle patrols throughout the day and night.
- A Quick Response Team (QRT) can be deployed during emergencies.
Lost & Found / Theft Reporting
- Report any theft, lost item, or found item immediately to the Duty Room or Asst. Security Officer.
- Security will coordinate with police if necessary and maintain internal records for follow-up.
Awareness & Safety Measures
- The Security Wing conducts fire safety drills, awareness campaigns.
- Residents are encouraged to stay informed and cooperate with security staff for overall safety.
