Centre for Intellectual Property Rights (CIPR)
In today's knowledge-driven economy, Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) have emerged as a critical pillar of academic excellence, research impact, innovation, entrepreneurship, and institutional reputation. Universities and institutes of national importance are increasingly evaluated not only by their scholarly publications but also by their ability to generate, protect, and translate intellectual assets into societal and industrial value. Patents, copyrights, trademarks, designs, and technology transfer activities have become key indicators of research quality and innovation capacity, contributing significantly to national and global university rankings, accreditation outcomes, industry collaborations, and the creation of sustainable innovation ecosystems.
Recognizing the growing importance of intellectual property in higher education and research, the National Institute of Technology Rourkela established the Centre for Intellectual Property Rights (CIPR) in 2022 as the dedicated institutional mechanism for the promotion, protection, management, and commercialization of intellectual property generated by its faculty members, researchers, students, and staff. Since its inception, CIPR has served as the nodal centre for fostering a culture of innovation and intellectual property awareness across the institute.
Under the leadership of the Chairperson, CIPR, the Centre facilitates the entire intellectual property lifecycle, including prior-art searches, IP awareness and training programs, evaluation of inventions, patent drafting and filing support, prosecution, portfolio management, and technology commercialization. The Centre works closely with inventors, academic departments, research centres, industry partners, and government agencies to ensure that innovative research outcomes are effectively protected and transformed into societal and economic benefits.
Over the years, NIT Rourkela has witnessed a remarkable increase in innovation-led research and intellectual property generation. The establishment of CIPR has contributed significantly to strengthening the institute's intellectual property ecosystem, resulting in a steadily growing number of patent disclosures, patent applications, granted patents, copyrights, and technology transfer initiatives. Through continuous awareness creation, policy support, capacity-building activities, and strategic guidance, CIPR is committed to positioning NIT Rourkela as a nationally and internationally recognized leader in innovation, research excellence, and intellectual property creation, thereby advancing the institute's vision of contributing meaningfully to technological progress, industry development, and societal welfare.
