BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Binit Kumar possesses over 13 years of teaching experience. He earned a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur, and a Master of Urban and Rural Planning from the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee. He has submitted his doctoral dissertation at the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela where he currently holds the position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Planning and Architecture. He teaches subjects like Climate and Cities, Energy-efficient Architecture, Climate-responsive Architecture, Parametric Design, BIM Studio, CAD Studio, etc. His scholarly contributions include journal articles on predicting the impact of urban heat islands in future cities. Additionally, he has served as a reviewer for numerous articles in journals such as Sustainable Cities and Society, Building and Environment, and Urban Climate. Energy for Sustainable Development, Urban Design and Planning (Proceedings of the ICE). His topic in Ph.D was "Impact of urban canopy parameters on the sky-view factor in Indian cities: A parametric approach". The research addressed an important gap in urban climate research by focusing on the quantification of sky-view factor (SVF) changes due to variations in urban canopy parameters (UCPs) in Indian cities. The integration of development control regulations (DCRs) with a parametric modelling framework to predict SVF in yet-to-be-developed urban areas was the major contribution. The research was framed around three objectives: (i) identifying suitable SVF calculation methods for finite canyons, (ii) quantifying the impact of UCPs such as plot parameters, building dimensions, and setbacks on SVF, and (iii) validating these relationships in real-world planned cities. He is actively involved in consultancy projects from various organizations, such as ITI Hirakud, Mahanadi Basin Power Limited (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL)), East-Coast Railway, etc.
