About the Department

The Department of Mathematics, one of the oldest departments of NIT Rourkela (formerly known as REC Rourkela) is known for its quality. It offers Integrated MSc, MSc, and PhD programs in Mathematics. The department wants to concentrate on offering a thorough undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum, pertinent research, and professional prospects in India and overseas. The theoretical and computational parts of mathematics are maintained through the dual degree programs in the subject. The program is extremely well-liked by JEE/JAM aspirants.

Mathematics is the language of science and engineering, the department covers a host of subjects like Analysis, Algebra, Topology, Differential equations, Numerical Analysis, Mathematical modeling, and Scientific computing. It also specializes in creating human resources in the areas of Finance, Wavelet analysis, Fractals, Graph Theory, Computational Statistics, Soft Computing and Machine learning, etc.

The faculty members of the department are enthusiastic and dedicated to a wide range of mathematical specializations is a major asset. The department is home to the Regional Library of the National Board of Higher Mathematics (NBHM), as well as its state-of-the-art computing facilities. Additionally, the department has been actively involved in setting up training programs for both teachers and students as well as conferences, workshops, and QIP short-term courses including Advanced Training in Mathematics (ATM) Schools. Many of the graduates have continued their education at reputable institutions both domestically and overseas. Regarding employment, our students are highly sought after in a variety of public and private sectors, including academics, finance, analytics, consultancy, information technology, data scientists, etc.
