THE Asia Rankings 2026: NIT Rourkela Retains Top Spot Among NITs; Secures 186th Rank in Asia, 8th in India!
National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela again achieved a significant milestone in the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings 2026, securing the 186th position among 929 universities from 36 countries and territories across Asia. The institute has improved its standing from last year’s 191st rank, reflecting its steady progress on the regional academic landscape.
Among Indian institutions featured in the rankings, NIT Rourkela stands at an impressive 8th position and is the highest-ranked among the listed National Institutes of Technology (NITs) in the country. Notably, it is the only NIT to be placed within the top 200 institutions in Asia in this edition.
The THE Asia University Rankings evaluate universities based on a comprehensive framework of 18 performance indicators, covering key areas such as teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.
