Biju Patnaik Central Library (BPCL) of NIT Rourkela, named after the legendary industrialist
and statesman, and the founding Chairman of Board of Governors of REC Rourkela,
is functioning since 1965. It acts as main learning resource centre of the institute
which constitutes robust collections in both print and electronic resources. The
central library supports teaching and research activities of faculty, students and

Halls of Residence

Large, exclusively student-occupied accommodation, maintained by the university.
Residents live in study bedrooms, either alone or sharing with another student.
The University, with its beautifully landscaped and carefully tended gardens, provides
an ideal environment for a congenial learning experience. Here is a campus that
invites students out of their hostels to spend time between classes midst greenery
and a riot of floral color.

Married Students Hostel

The institute has one married hostel with a capacity of 67 families. It comprises
of single room and double room.

Sports and Fitness

The Institute provides its students with world-class sports facilities which include
a Football –Hockey stadium named DILIP TIRCKEY STADIUM. It also houses a gymnasium
with all the modern facilities. The gymnasium also has 2 instructors to help the
students.
Apart from that, we also have the SACHIN TENDULKAR CRICKET GROUND equipped with
flood lights. We also have two tennis courts, a basketball court with separate timings
for male and female students.

Every hall of residence boasts of a Badminton court and a Volleyball court for its
boarders. It also provides facilities for Table Tennis, Carom and Chess. Some of
the hostels are also equipped with a modern gym with the latest equipments.

Swimming Pool

NIT also offers separate swimming facilities for men and women students. The Men's
50 m x 25 m floodlit swimming pool has eight lanes and the necessary facilities
to conduct even international-level competitions. The floodlit women's swimming
pool is 25m x 12m, and is in the new Women's Hostel premises. Separate swimming
coaches for men and women are available at particular times at the pools, which
are open from 6 a.m to 8.30 p.m every day.

Placement cell

The Placement Office is the nodal point of contact for companies to interact with
NIT Rourkela. The Office is well equipped and is designed to smoothly handle and
support the placement process at all stages. Infrastructure for pre-placement talks,
written tests, group discussions and personal interviews is available.
The following are the facilities to aid the process:

Well furnished air conditioned rooms to conduct interviews and group discussions.

Canteens

The campus has a couple of canteens, the calorie canteen and ABC canteen located
between the Audio Visual Hall and department of CSE. Another canteen, Hexagon, located
beside the hostels, frequented more perhaps by hostelites looking for a change from
hostel grub than the occasional visitor. The Campus Cafe is open from 8.00 A.M.
to 8.00 P.M. on all working days including Saturdays. A wide variety of South Indian
and North Indian dishes are available. During lunch time Meals are available at

Health Centre

The Institute dispensary is located behind the KHM Hall of residence and in front
of the school. Attached to it is the Appolo medical store that runs 24 x 7 catering
to the medical needs of the campus. The dispensary is headed by Dr. Panigrahy. There

Post Office

The campus has a Post Office. The post office is located near the new substation
and works on all weekdays from 7.00 A.M. to 5.00 P.M. and from 9.00 A.M. to 2.00

Banks

The institute has one bank situated in the campus, State Bank of India. The bank
is regular branche in the campus and is housed in separate buildings near the residential
area of faculty. Application forms for important national level exams such as JEE,
GATE and CAT are sold in these banks.
State Bank of India : : Institute employees have their salaries credited
to the State Bank of India. State Bank of India has two ATMs - one located in the

Places of Worship

There are three temples on campus - the Hanuman temple, Shiva Temple and Sri Rama
Temple near the institute substation and Mangala temple near the South block guest
house.

Guest Houses

The Institute has two guest houses within the campus. The guest houses are near
the Directors banglow. The one in front of the banglow is South Block and the one
behind the banglow is North Guest House. The South Block Guest House has altogether
18 A/c Suites with a telephone and a TV in each room. VIPs, Institute guests and
invited guests are usually accommodated here. The North Block Guest House has 15
rooms in total all are Air-conditioned rooms, This provides boarding and lodging
facilities for the Institute guests and Visitors, newly appointed faculty, staff
members, delegates and participants attending various Conferences, Seminars, Symposia
and Workshops. Both the guest houses are operated as a non-profit activity to mainly
support the academic and research activity on the campus with a homely atmosphere
and ambiance traditionally acclaimed for its environs of hygiene and food of homely
relish and richness.

Security

NIT Rourkela has developed an efficient security system. The Security Wing of the
Institute has laid down a set of rules and regulations which have to be complied
with by all residents and visitors on campus. The Security Wing is headed by the
Chief Security Officer and has a Duty room functioning round-the-clock to prevent
any breach of security.
It is the responsibility of all the residents of the campus that they inform the
Chief Security Officer / Duty Officer / Duty Room immediately on noticing any mishap,
suspicious movements of persons, any untoward incident happening and/or, information
regarding probability of any of these. Timely information is of vital importance.
NIT Rourkela, falls under the jurisdiction of Sector 2 police Station.Any case warranting
Police Cover / Assistance should be reported to the Inspector of Police of the respective
Police Stations. Such incidents should also be brought to the notice of CSO for
internal enquiry. It must be understood that the Security wing of the institute
has no policing or constabulary powers. It has only watch and ward responsibility.
Listed below are certain security requirements which must be adhered to on campus.
Identity Cards All employees of NIT Rourkela are required to carry ID cards
issued by the Institute. This document must be produced on demand to the Security
Personnel.
Temporary Passes The Security wing issues special passes to contractors,
casual employees, labourers employed by the Institute, servants, vendors and temporary
visitors. These papers are time-bound and are NOT licenses for services to be rendered
by the individuals.
Daily Passes These passes are issued to casual visitors by the security personnel
manning the gate (entry points).
Group Passes These are issued to groups of workers employed by contractors
or the institute and to groups of students from other Institutions visiting our
departments and centers.
Vehicle Passes The CSO's office issues self-adhesive stickers for two-wheelers
and four-wheelers (with color codes to identify campus-ites and non campus-ites)
and temporary passes to vehicle owners. The Vehicle Registration Book must be produced
for receipt of the passes/tokens. Gate passes are issued to monitor movement of
stores/materials out of the Institute premises.
Miscellaneous Points
• Speed limit of any powered vehicle within the campus is 40 km/h.
• Persons below the age of 18 years are not permitted to drive powered vehicles.
• Consumption of alcohol at public places inside the campus is not allowed
• Poaching/hunting/fishing is strictly prohibited.
• Lighting of open fires on the campus is not allowed.
• Trafficking in/or possession of any type of drugs is an offence.

Others

A number of literary and social activities take place on the campus throughout the
year. In addition, technical, music festivals and other cultural festivals are organized
regularly. Apart from the cultural activities and sporting events that go on throughout
the academic year, there are many other forms of recreation open to the students.
There are a number of clubs including the Music Club, Yoga Club, Film Club etc.
