Syllabus

Module 1 :

Introduction to materials: Classification of materials: metals, ceramics, polymers and composites; selection of materials, and materials usage in modern technology. [ 5 hr]

Module 2 :

Advanced Materials: Smart Materials, Magnetostrictive Materials, Smart Fluids, Superalloys, Nanostructured Materials, Chromogenic Materials, Self-Healing Materials, Self-Cleaning Materials, Bulk Metallic Glass (BMG), High Entropy Materials, Biomaterials, Ultra-light Materials, Metal-Organic Frameworks, and Ultrafine-Grained Materials. [18 hr]

Module 3 :

Structure-properties correlations: Basics on Physical and Mechanical Properties, Electronic properties: free electron theory, Fermi energy, semiconductors, Hall effect, dielectric behavior, piezo- and ferroelectric behavior. Band model of semiconductors, organic semiconductors, Fermi level, law of mass action, Hall coefficients for intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors, Hall effect devices and electrical conductivity. Magnetic properties: Origin of magnetism in materials, para-, dia-, ferro- and ferrimagnetism, domain theory, magnetic hysteresis, Weiss molecular field theory, Heisenberg's theory, domain walls, Exchange energy. Thermal properties: thermal expansion, and thermoelectricity. Optical properties: refractive index, absorption, and transmission of electromagnetic radiation. [17 hr]
