Syllabus

Module 1 :

Introduction
Experiment 1 – Familiarize different metallography Lab Instruments
Experiment 2 – Study the microstructure of different types of plain carbon steel. Low C (0.2% C), Medium C (0.6% C) and High C (1.1%C) steel.
Experiment 3 – Study the microstructure of different types of alloy steel. Mild Steel, Rail Steel and File Steel.
Experiment 4 – Study the microstructure of different types of cast irons (CI). White CI, Grey CI, Malleable CI and Spheroidal Graphite CI / Nodular CI.
Experiment 5 – Study the microstructure of pure copper, 70-30 Brass, 60-40 Brass
Experiment 6 – Metallography of Cu-alloy at various annealing temp (300, 350 and 500 C)
Experiment 7 – Metallography of Al and Al-Si alloys
Experiment 8– Fracture specimen (ductile, brittle)
Experiment 9 – Metallography of NiTi smart alloys

Course Objective

1 .

Develop practical skills in metallographic specimen preparation.

2 .

Understand metallographic principles for different engineering materials.

3 .

Perform qualitative and quantitative microstructural analysis.

4 .

Characterize phases, grains, inclusions, porosity, and defects.

5 .

Correlate microstructure with processing and mechanical properties.

6 .

Analyze welds, heat-treated alloys, coatings, and additively manufactured materials.

Course Outcome

1 .

CO1: Prepare metallographic specimens according to ASTM standards.

2 .

CO2: Operate optical and electron microscopes for microstructural characterization.

3 .

CO3: Measure grain size, phase fraction, porosity, and inclusion content.

4 .

CO4: Analyze the effects of processing, heat treatment, welding, and additive manufacturing on microstructure.

5 .

CO5: Interpret metallographic images using quantitative image analysis software.

6 .

CO6: Prepare professional metallography reports for industrial and research applications.
