Syllabus

Module I: Review of grammar and basic writing: Basic grammar, punctuation, apostrophe, structure of critical sentences.

Module II: Syntax and Semantics: Evaluation of sentence structure, complex phrasing, separation of structure and meaning, deep and surface structures, error analysis

Module III: Indexing, Abstracting and Note Taking: Composition to meaning meaning to composition, key word analysis, phrasing thoughts and composition.

Module IV: Composition: Review of literature, abstract writing, introducing topics, finding a thesis statement, practical evaluation.

Module V: Editing and Formatting: Grammatical particles, structure, colloquial expressions, native voices and nuances, standard phrasing, academic formatting, style, native speakers’ style.

Module VI: Interrogation: Questioning a topic and thought, questioning a sentence and writing, evaluation of writing, reviewing articles.

Course Objectives

  • Introduce the students to the universe of scientific and technical writing.

  • Introduce multiple genres of writing for effective academic communication.

Course Outcomes

CO1: Introduce the universe of scientific and critical writing to PhD students so that they can write research papers and their own theses.

CO2: Help students understand how critical research is documented with a special focus on language, writing, and editing.

CO3: Allow students to analyze academic writing critically and address issues of their own writing.

CO4: Enable students to make appropriate grammatical and lexical choices that will improve the quality of research writing.
