Syllabus
1. A- Concepts of Rural society- rural, rural-urban contrast and continuum, Desakota Model, Little and Great tradition, Gemeinschaft & Gesellschaft.
B- Rural socio-economic & political structure & changes: Caste, class, family, marriage, kinship, gender relations, jajmani system, dominant caste, Sanskritization, modernization, globalization, Peasant and farmer movements, Decentralization and Local self Govt- Panchayati raj institutions.
2. Environment and Ecology of the rural: landscape elements, land use patterns, dependency on natural resources, human impact on the environment, human-wildlife conflict.
3. Rural Social Problems: agrarian crisis, unemployment, poverty, lack of proper health care, farmer suicides, migration, low literacy rate, gender related issues, transportation and connectivity issues, regional disparities, poor housing, difficulty to recover from natural disasters etc.
4. Stakeholders of Rural Development: identification of stakeholders, role of stakeholders, etc.
5. Essentials of Rural Development (RD): features, approaches, Acts, Policies, Schemes, Challenges or barriers to development, sustainable development, , use of Information & Communication Technology(ICT) and media for RD , use of science and technology for RD, development of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Under-Privileged Groups, women, PESA Act, PPP model, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) , Micro-finance, SHGs, rural credit systems, Need assessment, Microplanning, Monitoring and Evaluation of Rural development programmes.
Course Objectives
- 1. Introduce and develop knowledge, skills and competencies to assess needs of the rural community for inclusive and holistic rural development goals.
- 2. Prepare to explore and execute effective rural development interventions and strategies without compromising with the local culture and natural environment.
- Strengthen skills for effective contribution to projects under Govt, Corporates, NGOs, etc. or have own projects.

• Understanding of Rural development of developed.
• Methods to aim for Rural development initiatives keeping in mind sustainable development learnt.
• Students employability in Govt programmes, NGOs, CBOs, Projects of Funding Agencies, CSR Units of Corporate/Business houses, research organizations or start their own initiatives improved.
