Module 1 :

Construction Methods (8 hours)
Concrete construction, Batching and Mixing, Transportation and Placement, Finishing, Formwork, Scaffolding, Steel construction, Fabrication and erection, High-rise Buildings, Highways, Bridges, Underground Utilities, Tunnels, Offshore platforms.

Module 2 :

Prefabricated and Modular Construction (7 hours)
Prefabrication, Types of Prefabricated Structures, Planning for pre-casting, Design Considerations, Design Requirements for Safety Against Progressive Collapse, Joints, Stages of Precasting of Concrete Products, Tests For Components/Structures, Stacking, Handling Arrangements, Identification and Marking, Transport, Erection, Equipment, Modular Construction, Modular Co-ordination, Advantages and Limitations of Modular Construction.

Module 3 :

Construction Equipment (7 hours)
Construction Equipment Classification, Construction Equipment for Hoisting - Hoists, Crane, Factors Affecting Selection of Construction Equipment, Equipment Employment Cost, Depreciation Analysis - Straight line method, Sum of Years Digit method, Declining Balance method, Replacement of Equipment - Physical life, Profit life, Economic life, Intuitive method, Minimum cost method, Maximum profit method, Time Value method.

Module 4 :

Equipment for Earthwork (7 hours)
Earth-moving operations, Construction Earthwork Equipment: Tractor, Grader, Excavator, Roller. Bulldozer-Required power (Rolling resistance, Grade resistance), Available power, Usable power (Rimpull and Drawbar Pull), Performance Chart, Payload measurement methods- Gravimetric and Volumetric method, Bulldozer types, Blade adjustments, Productive dozing methods, Production estimation, Scraper - Scraper operations, Types, Production cycle, Scraper loading methods- Back-track loading, Chain loading, and Shuttle loading, Production estimation, Truck- Classification, Production cycle of truck, Production estimation.

Module 5 :

Other Construction Equipment (7 hours)
Equipment of Dredging- Dragline, Equipment of Trenching - Clam Shell, Equipment for De-watering - Pumping methods, and Electro-osmosis method, Equipment of grouting- Injection method, Slurry grouting, Chemical grouting, Compaction grouting, Jet grouting, Equipment for Demolition - Excavator, Bulldozer, Crusher, Hydraulic shear, Wrecking Balls, Cutting and Grinding Tools, Forklift, Dump Truck, Tunnelling - Percussion drilling, Rotary drilling, and Rotary Percussion drilling, Tunnel Boring Machine, Crane - Parts of crane, Principle of fulcrum, Crane motions- Travelling, Hoisting, Luffing, Slewing, Types of cranes- Lattice boom crawler crane, Lattice boom truck mounted cranes, Truck mounted telescopic crane, Modified cranes for heavy lifting, Tower crane- Top slewing tower crane, Bottom slewing tower crane, Mobile tower crane, Horizoontal boom tower crane, Luffing Jib tower crane, Articulated jib tower crane, Erection and Dismantling of tower crane, Factors affecting lifting capacity of crane, Guidelines for safe crane operations.

Course Objective

1 .

To study the basic construction methods associated with a construction project.

2 .

To study and understand the various types of equipment used for earthwork.

3 .

To study and understand the various types of equipment used for tunneling, drilling, blasting, dewatering, material handling conveyors, and their applications in construction projects.

4 .

To study and understand the importance of safety management related to a construction project.

Course Outcome

1 .

Develop knowledge of various construction methods in the construction industry.

2 .

Develop knowledge of prefabricated and module construction techniques.

3 .

Develop knowledge on planning and selection of equipment.

4 .

Explain the fundamentals of earthwork operations, earth-moving operations, and types of earthwork equipment.

Develop knowledge of special types of construction equipment and will be able to select the proper materials handling equipment.
