Module 1 :

Construction Quality Management (6 hours)
Definition of Quality, Evolution of Quality Control, Quality in Construction, Quality Gurus - Walter A. Shewhart, W. Edwards Deming, Joseph M. Juran, K. Ishikawa, Armand V. Feigenbaum, Philip Crosby, Genichi Taguchi, Total Quality Management, Framework for Total Quality Management, Total Quality Management in Construction Sector, Barriers in the adoption of Total Quality Management in Construction Industry, Factors unique to the construction sector, Continuous improvement in Quality, Steps for implementing Total Quality Management.

Module 2 :

Project Quality Plan and Assessment Systems (6 hours).
Quality Management Principles, Project Quality Plan - Role, Need, and Key points in developing Project Quality Plan, Sample Project Quality Plan, Development of Project Quality Plan, Quality Systems, Triangle. Quality Assessment and Improvement Strategies -Construction Quality Assessment System (CONQUAS), Performance Assessment Scoring Scheme (PASS), Quality Assessment System in Construction (QLASSIC), British Board of Agreement (BBA), ISO Standards for Quality Management System.

Construction Quality Assurance and Control (6 hours)
Quality Assurance, Quality Control- Inspection, , Quality Assurance and Quality Control, Construction Quality Audit- Audit, Role of Auditor and Auditee, Principles of Auditing, Types of Audits, Audit Classification, Elements of Quality Audit, Quality Audit Process, Process involved in corrective actions, Risks in Auditing, Quality Control Tools- Cause and effect diagram, Pareto chart, Histogram, Check sheet, Scatter diagram, Stratification, Control chart, Six Sigma- Principles, Model, Tools, Implementation steps, Barriers to implementation, Applications in Construction Industry.

Module 4 :

Construction Safety Management (9 hours)
Construction Industry: Introduction and Nature, Need of Safety, History of Safety Manegement, Evolution of Heath and Safety Acts, Standards and Organizations, Accident - Causes, Modes, and Types, Accident Causation Theories- Heinrich's Domino Theory, Vincoli's Domino Theory, Swiss Cheese Model, Multiple Causation Model, Ferrel's Theory, Accident Root-Cause Tracing Model, Distraction Theory, Safety Pyramid, Cost of Accident-Direct Cost and Indirect Cost, Safety Performance Indicatiors-Reactive Indices (Lagging Indicators)-Experince Modification Rating, Lost Time, Recordable Incident Rate, First Aid Injury Rate, Proactive Indices (Leading Indicators) - Near Miss, Jobsite Safety Inspection, Behaviour-based Safety (BBS), and Safety Perception Survey.

Module 5 :

Construction Safety Techniques and Guidelines (9 hours)
Safety, Safety Culture and Climate, Construction Safety Guidelines- ISO, OSHA, BIS Standards, Labour Laws. Zero Accident Concepts, Safety Incentives, Occupational Health, and Ergonomics, Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment, Job Safety Analysis/Job Hazard Analysis, Safety Policy, Safety Manuals, Safety Audit, Safety Training and Orientation, Safety Committee, Accident Investigation and Analysis Method - The ARCTM Model for Accident Investigation, Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Failure Modes and Effect Analysis (FMEA), Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP).

To study the concepts of total quality management in construction.

To study the concepts of safety management in construction.

Students will be able to learn quality management guidelines and quality circles and develop the skill of preparing inspection procedures for quality planning.
