Module 1 :

Subject {L-T-P / C}: PH5071: Computational Astrophysics Laboratory {1-0-3 / 3}
Subject Nature: Laboratory

1. Familiarity with Telescope.
2. Information about the astronomical objects from the spectra and image.
3. Identification of important lines in the spectra and determination of Doppler shift and radial velocity of an object.
4. Determination of ultraviolet extinction curve of a star using pair method.
5. Familiarity with Constellations using Stellerium.
6. Determination of retrograde motion of planets of a planet using Stellarium.
8. To measure the distance to the moon using parallax method.
9. To determine the spectral types of stars by looking at their spectral.
10. Study of solar spectrum and determination of element abundances.
11. Determination of distance and age of star clusters using color-magnitude diagram.
12. Determination of Hubble’s constant and the age of the Universe using spectra and image of a sample of galaxies.

Course Objective

To provide hands-on experience in various aspects of computational astrophysics.

To enable the students to gain the practical knowledge of measuring few parameters in astronomy.

Learn to extract information about celestial objects from spectra and images.

Understand the basics of telescopes and their operation

Course Outcome

1 .

Course Outcome:
1. By the end of this course, students will gain practical experience in computational astrophysics and develop skills in data analysis, interpretation, and visualization.
2. Students will learn experience about the real sky using the virtual sky software like Stellarium
3. Students will learn how the physical parameters relating to Astronomical objects are measured.
