Syllabus

Module 1 :

Module 1: Formation of stars, Initial Mass Function, Equation of State, Stellar Structure Equations, Pre-main sequence evolution, Hayashi Track, Zero Age Main Sequence, H-burning Phase, PP Chain, CNO Cycle,

Module 2: Energy Transportation in lower and upper main sequence stars, Criteria for the onset of convection, Mass Luminosity Relation, Virial theorem, Source of opacity in stellar medium, Effect of chemical composition on stellar evolution

Module 3: Overall Contraction Phase, H-burning in shell, Schönberg-Chandrasekhar limit, properties of subgiant and red-giant branch stars, Hertzsprung gap

Module 4: Onset of He-burning, Horizontal Branch stars, Asymptotic giant branch stars, Properties of Luminous Blue Variables and Wolf-Rayet stars, Planetary Nebula Phase, White dwarf, Chandrasekhar limit, C, Ne, O, Si - burning phases, Supernova explosion, formation of Neutron Star and Black hole.

Module 5: Probing the interior using stellar pulsation: Stellar Pulsation Across HR-diagram, pulsation mechanism, Pulsation Mode Identification, Modelling of stellar pulsation, generating rotation profile from pulsation.

Course Objective

To learn the basics of star formation and stellar structure.

2 .

To get acquainted with energy transportation in stars.

3 .

To understand the post-main sequence evolution and final fate of stars.

4 .

To develop the understanding of stellar pulsation and its application.

Course Outcome

1 .

(1) Students will understand the theory of star formation and early evolution.
(2) Students will acquire the knowledge to construct the models of stars.
(3) Students will understand the advance evolutionary status of stars
(4) Students will know the process of supernovae explosion and formation of neutron star & black hole
(5) Students will learn the methods to probe the interior of stars.
