Module 1 :

Introduction: History of sensors, Transducers, Detectors, Applications of sensors: Automobiles, Industrial automation, Agriculture, Defense, Space, Energy harvesting, Medical diagnosis, Environment, Consumer electronics, Recent trends in sensor technology

Module 2 :

(7 hours)
Sensing principles: Electric Charges, Fields, and Potentials, Capacitance, Magnetism, Induction, Resistance, Piezoelectric Effect, Pyroelectric Effect, Hall Effect, Thermoelectric Effects, Sound Waves, Temperature and Thermal Properties of Materials, Heat Transfer

Module 3 :

(6 hours)
Sensor types: Position and motion sensor, Strain sensor, Pressure Sensors, Flow Sensors, Microphones, Moisture and gas Sensors, Light Detectors, Radiation Detectors, Temperature Sensors, Chemical and Biological Sensors

Module 4 :

(7 hours)
Sensor electronics: Sensitivity, Directivity, Sensor circuits, Sensor design, Data transmission, Wireless integration, Filters, Amplifiers, Analog to digital converters, Calibration, Digital display, Signals and auto control of systems, Artifacts, Noise reduction, Power supply

Module 5 :

Sensing materials: Metal oxide, Chalcogenide, Perovskite, Carbon based materials, Semiconductors, Thin films, Bellows, and Membranes, Nanostructures, 2-D Materials, Composite materials, Hybrid materials, Sensor Structure, FET, Interdigitated Electrode (IDE), MEMS (cantilever, Cavity), Optical sensor

Module 6 :

Advancements: Surface enhancement, Porous structure, Surface functionalization, Doping, Selective sensing, sensor packaging, “Lab on a Chip” sensors, Future challenges

Course Objective

To impart knowledge on importance of sensors in modern systems

Working mechanism of sensors along with sensor circuits

Sensing materials, characterization and related processes

Implementation of sensors and transducers for auto control of a system into a control system structure
