Subject {L-T-P / C} : CY2172 : Functional Group Estimation Laboratory { 0-0-3 / 2}

Subject Nature : Practical

Coordinator : Bimalendu Adhikari

Syllabus

Module 1 :

• Estimation of carbonyl group in organic compounds
• Estimation of hydroxyl group in organic compounds
• Estimation of amine group in organic compounds
• Estimation of sugars using quantitative methods
• Estimation of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) using titrimetric techniques
• Estimation of azobenzene isomers (cis/trans) by UV-visible spectroscopy
• Estimation of the iodine number of fats and oils
• Estimation of organic acids and amine in a mixture

Course Objective

1 .

Develop a strong understanding of various quantitative techniques for estimating functional groups in organic compounds.

2 .

Gain hands-on experience in performing titrimetric, gravimetric, and spectroscopic analyses for functional group estimation.

3 .

Learn accurate preparation of reagents, proper handling of glassware, and careful data collection for quantitative analysis.

4 .

Analyze experimental results critically and apply quantitative reasoning to interpret data for determining functional group content.

Course Outcome

1 .

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
1. Apply quantitative titrimetric techniques for estimating key functional groups such as carbonyl, hydroxyl and amine in organic compounds.
2. Perform accurate estimations of specific organic compounds like sugar, Vitamin C and evaluate the degree of unsaturation in fats (oils) using appropriate quantitative methods.
3. Analyze UV-visible spectral data to determine cis/trans azobenzene ratios in unknown samples.
4. Evaluate experimental data by comparing observed and expected values to assess sample purity and functional group content.
5. Demonstrate proper lab safety protocols, accurate reagent preparation, and effective teamwork during laboratory exercises.
