Module 1 :

s and p-Block elements: Alkali, alkaline-earth metals, Boron family, Carbon family, Nitrogen family, Oxygen family and Halogen family. Structural features of some selected main group compounds (Ex. Boranes, S-N heterocycles).d-Block elements (Transition element): electronic configuration and comparative study of ionic radii, ionization potential, oxidation state, redox potential. Introductory Organometallic Chemistry: Definition & nomenclature, Counting Electrons (EAN Rules, 18 electron rule). Bonding and application carbonyl (CO) complexes. The isolobal Analogy. f-block elements: Chemistry of Lanthanide elements, extraction, separation and magnetic properties, redox chemistry. Chemistry of Radio-active Elements:: Nuclear recactions, fission, fusion, Neutron activation analysis, isotope dilution analysis, Radiometric titrations, nuclear fuel reprocessing.

Course Objective

1 .

To provide basic concepts of main group and transition metal chemistry.

2 .

To learn and understand the trends in periodic table and properties of the elements group wise.

3 .

To know the structural features of selected compounds

4 .

To gain knowledge on Basic understanding of f-block elements

Course Outcome

1 .

1. To explain and rationalize the bonding, reactivity and properties of main group compounds.
2. Predict the periodic properties and the reactivity of different elements and their salts.
3. To be able to explain fundamental group trends among the elements in s and p block.
4. To be able to analyse and evaluate chemistry of relevant compounds and their industrial applications.
5. Apply the knowledge in main group and transition metal chemistry to generate ideas for relevant extraction, identification and estimation procedures.
