Module 1 :

1. Determination of average particle size of a mixture of particles by sieve analysis.
2. Study and operation of Jaw crusher and thereby verification of Ritinger s constant.
3. Determination of reduction ratio, maximum feed size and theoretical capacity of crushing rolls.
4. Determination of the effect of no. of balls on grinding in a Ball mill.
5. To find out the effect of time on grinding and amount of undersize at zero time of grinding in a ball
mill and to compare its operating speed with the critical speed.
6. To find out enrichment of the coal sample using a froth flotation cell.
7. Determination of the effectiveness of a vibrating screen.
8. To find the efficiency of separation of particles of different sizes using a Trommel.
9. Study and operation of a Hammer mill thereby finding its reduction ratio.
10. Study and operation of a Screw Conveyor and study theeffect of inclination angle on transportation
of materials.
11. Study and operation of a cyclone separator and thereby finding its efficiency of separation.
12. Study and operation of a Magnetic separator and thereby finding its efficiency of separation.
13. Study and operation of a Gyratory Crusher and thereby finding its reduction ratio.

Course Objective

1 .

Practical Understanding of equipments and principles for handling of materials

2 .

To provide a first hand knowledge on understanding the mechanism involved in various mechanical operation equipments, performing experiments related to particle size separation and size reduction and subsequent interpretations of experimental data.

3 .

To develop analytical abilities for assessing and optimizing the performance of grinding and crushing equipment, by studying variables like feed size, reduction ratios, and the impact of operational speeds on equipment efficacy, as seen in experiments with ball mills, gyratory crushers, and jaw crushers.

4 .

To cultivate a comprehensive understanding of the principles of material conveyance and screening mechanisms, through hands-on experience with screw conveyors, vibrating screens, and Trommels, focusing on aspects such as transportation efficiency and the sorting of materials based on size and other properties.

Course Outcome

1 .

Upon completion of this course the students would be able to:
1. Understand the mechanisms of materials handling and processing euipments
2. Handle the size reduction and size separation equipments independently
3. Calculate particle size through different analysis techniques
