Indian Economy in the Pre-British Period, Trend and Pattern of Economic Development after Independence: Population growth and development, National Income, Poverty and Inequality, Human Resources and Development: Health and Education, Occupational Structure, Natural Resources, Infrastructure

Unit 2: Planning and Economic Development
Economic Planning – Types of Planning, Goal and Strategies of Indian Planning, Market Mechanism and State Intervention, Public Sector and Disinvestment Policy, Economic Reforms and Liberalisation, The role of NITI Aayog

Unit 3: Agriculture, Industry and Development
Indian Agriculture since Independence, Food Security in India, Irrigation and other agricultural inputs, Land reforms, Size of farm and productive efficiencies, Rural Credit and Agricultural Marketing, Indian Agricultural Policies, Industrial Pattern Large – Medium - Small – Micro Enterprises Unorganized Sector and Informalization of Indian Economy Indian Industrial Policies

Unit 4: Trade Policy and Development
Foreign Trade of India India’s Balance of Payments Special Economic Zone (SEZ) GATT, WTO and India’s Foreign Trade, Indian Currency and Financial System, Indian Trade Policies

Unit 5: Health, Nutrition and Education
Health and nutrition divide in India, contemporary health and nutrition policies and human development, Fiscal space for health, nutrition and education, new education policy

Course Objective

1 .

• To study the major challenges and opportunities in the major sectors of the Indian Economy like Agriculture, Industry and foreign sectors.

Course Outcome

1 .

On successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
1. Learn the basic features of Indian economy and also understand the practices and policies related to Indian economic development.
2. Examine major challenges and opportunities in the key sectors of the Indian Economy like Agriculture and Industry.
3. Gain knowledge of how trade policies and financial systems affect India’s economic development
4. Know policies related to education, health and nutrition from public policy perspectives.
5. Analyse the impact of sectoral plans on economic development in India.
