Syllabus

Chromatography: Adsorption chromatography, Partition chromatography, Paper chromatography, Thin-layer chromatography, column chromatography, gas-liquid chromatography, ion-exchange chromatography.
Spectroscopic techniques of characterization: UV-Vis spectroscopy (Basic principle, instrumentation, characteristic absorptions of organic compounds, IR Spectroscopy (Basic principle, instrumentation, modes of vibration, absorption trends, analysis of IR sprctrum), NMR Spectroscopy (1H NMR, Basic principle, chemical shift and shielding, instrumentation, chemical equivalence, magnetic equivalence, spin-spin coupling, NMR spectrum of simple organic compounds), Mass-spectrometry (Basic Principle, instrumentation, ionization methods, fragementation, molecular ion peak, metastable peak, McLafferty rearrangement, nitrogen rule, Mass analysis of simple compounds). Comprehensive problems on structure elucidation of small organic molecules.

To learn the basic principles of techniques used for purification and characterizations of organic compounds.

To learn how to make structural assignments and characterization of organic compounds using various spectroscopic technologies, especially Mass, UV-Vis, IR, and 1H-NMR techniques

CO 1: It provides the knowledge of different separation method of organic compounds including chromatography, distillation, sublimation, crystallisation and filtration techniques.
CO 2: It provides the knowledge of different chromatographic method of separation and their applications.
CO 3: It enables the students to learn the basic characterization of organic compounds using UV-vis, IR spectroscopy methods.
CO 4: It provides knowledge of basic principles, instrumentation of NMR spectroscopy and how to characterize the organic molecules using this spectroscopic method.
CO 5: It provides knowledge of basic principles, instrumentation of Mass-spectrometry and their application in synthetic research.
CO 6: In addition, at the end of the session, it enables the students to learn single crystal X-ray diffraction methodology for analyzing the structure of single crystal of any compound.
