Syllabus

Module 1 :

1. Estimation of halides in water samples by potentiometric titration.
2. Determination of pH, salinity, and conductivity of water samples. Measurement of water quality parameters: Colour, turbidity, temperature, acidity and alkalinity.
3. Estimation of Co2+ and Ni2+ by colorimetry/ spectrophotometry.
4. Estimation of alkali metals (Na +, K+) in various samples by flame-photometry.
5. Determination of heavy metals including mercury, Arsenic by AAS.
6. Spectrophotometric Methods of Estimation: Fluoride, Nitrate, Phosphate, Chromate [Cr6+], sulphates.
7. Spectrophotometric Methods of Estimation Hg, Pb, Cd.
8. Spectrophotometric Methods of Estimation of one pesticide, phenol, Estimation of C, N, S in coal and soil samples by CHNS Instrument.
9. Estimation of a) Cyanide, b) Detergents (colorimetric method) c) Oil and grease in water.
10. Preparation of simple coagulant and stabilizer for water treatment. Estimation of TDS by turbidometry.

Course Objective

1 .

1. To impart hands on experience in performing qualitative as well as quantitative detection of environmental harmful chemical compounds and ions.

2 .

2. To elucidate the use of different simple instrumental techniques for sensing of harmful chemical substances and ions.

Course Outcome

1. To learn and understand the chemical methods of quantitative detection of environmental harmful chemicals.

2. To learn how to perform calorimetric and other experimental techniques for evaluate environmental harmful substances.

3. To learn simple instrumental techniques used in chemical analysis.
