Module 1 :

Module 1 Introduction to Excavation Engineering, Earth Material characterisation, Geotechnical Description,
Module 2 Physical and mechanical properties of Rock Mass as a whole, Rock Mass Quality, Ground water influences and measurement,
Module 3: Rock Stress, Site Investigation, Stress and strain in Rock, Strength and Swelling Behavior,
Module 4 Failure Criteria, Fragmentation and optimization
Module 5 Rock Reinforcement: Rock Support and Design
Module 6 Case studies involving rock principles and their applications

Course Objective

1 .

To understand earth materials and their excavation including the issues involved

2 .

To determine and predict the Rock Mass quality

3 .

To design and predict stability of rock excavation.

4 .

To analyse different excavation challenges and situations and solutions

Course Outcome

1 .

1. To be able to classify earth material in terms of physical and mechanical parameters
2. To determine the effect of forces on rock material and predict the failure criteria
3.To identify the parameters for developing rock mass quality as well as fragmentation
4. To design the support requirement of an excavation
5. To analyse excavation instability and predict the solutions
