Syllabus

Module 1 :

Module 1: Introduction: scope of powder metallurgy, characterization of metal powders, physical properties-particle size and shape determination, technological properties-apparent density, tap density, green density, sintered density, flow rate etc. 10 Hours
Module 2: Powder manufacturing: reduction, electrolysis, and atomization processes. 6 Hours
Module 3: Mixing of powder, compaction and powder lubrication: Die compaction. 5 Hours
Module 4: Sintering: solid and liquid state sintering, sintering mechanisms. Sintering furnaces and sintering atmospheres. Sintering theory and the influence of different processing conditions, wetting and surface diffusion. Advanced consolidation techniques like hot pressing (HP), hot iso-static pressing (HIP), spark plasma sintering (SPS) etc. 8 Hours
Module 5: Powder metallurgy products: bearing, filters, friction parts, hard metals, refractory metals, contact materials, magnetic materials, structural parts, and dispersion strengthened materials. 6 Hours

To study basics of powder compaction and different powder compaction techniques

Understanding of fundamentals of sintering and applications of different sintering techniques to fabricate P/M products

CO4: To learn the characterization of powders and sintered products

CO6: To have an idea of powder characteristics on the effect of compaction and sintering
