Syllabus

Module 1 :

Thermal decomposition of Calcium carbonate and measurement of its equilibrium constant and free energy change

Module 2 :

Pyro-metallurgical Extraction: Extraction of iron from fines through pelletisation, firing of pellets, and carbothermic reduction at low and high temperatures

Module 3 :

Extraction of Cu from a low-grade ore through hydrometallurgical and Electro-metallurgical routes

Module 4 :

Evaluation of corrosion potential and rate of stainless steel in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution with varying Cl ion concentration

Module 5 :

Phase transformation: Precipitation kinetics and age-hardening phenomenon in Al-based alloys

Course Objective

1 .

To impart skills to conduct and analyse experiments on various thermodynamic processes.

2 .

To develop technical skills to use modern software tools for the calculations of thermodynamic problems

3 .

To understand the feasibility of a reaction during pyro-metallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes

4 .

Understand the current-potential relationships in galvanic cells

5 .

To evaluate different thermodynamic and/or kinetic properties in phase transformations

Course Outcome

1 .

The students will be able to evaluate thermodynamic aspects of the calcination process

2 .

The students will be able to learn and address specific problems in pyrometallurgy in ferrous extraction processes in industries

3 .

The students will be able to learn and address specific problems in hydrometallurgy in non-ferrous extraction processes in industries

4 .

The students will be able to learn and address specific problems in electrometallurgy in non-ferrous extraction processes in industries

5 .

The students will be able to learn and evaluate corrosion thermodynamics and kinetics

6 .

The students will understand the precipitation kinetics and age-hardening behavior of Al-alloys
