Subject {L-T-P / C} : EE6155 : Modern Digital Communication Systems { 3-0-0 / 3}

Syllabus

Module 1 :

Overview of Communication Systems,
Channel Effects, Signal to Noise Ratio, Channel Capacity, Signal Distortion over a Communication Channel.

Module 2 :

Source coding & Channel coding.

Module 3 :

Performance Analysis of Digital communication systems: Optimum Linear Detector for Binary Polar Signaling, Coherent Receivers for Digital carrier modulations, Signal Space Analysis of Optimum Detection, Vector Decomposition of White Noise Random Processes, Optimum receiver for White Gaussian Noise Channels, Non-Coherent detection.

Module 4 :

Spread Spectrum Communications: FHSS systems, multiple FHSS user systems and performance, applications, DSSS systems, CDMA of DSSS, MUD, Modern Practical DSSS CDMA systems. Digital communications under linearly distortive channels: Receiver Channel Equalisation, Channel Estimation, and Decision Feedback Equaliser.

Module 5 :

Modulation & Coding Trade-offs: Bandwidth efficient modulation, Modulation and Coding for band-limited channels, Trellis coded modulation.

Course Objective

1 .

Students are to understand the broader scope of Digital Communication Systems.

2 .

To equip the students with basic knowledge of digital signalling, information theory and coding for digital transmission and reception.

3 .

To provide fundamental concepts on Advanced Modulation Techniques and BER calculations.
The course will also provide knowledge to analyse, evaluate, design and solve complex engineering problems in digital communication using modern tools.

4 .

Understanding of Spread Spectrum Modulation Techniques and their applications.

Model digital communication signals and systems using appropriate mathematical techniques

Analyse the engineering principles, theories and practices, which are fundamental to the successful design of a digital communication system.

Establish unambiguous mathematical statements for describing every step of transmitting and receiving a signal through a communication link

Characterise error-control codes for design and development of reliable communication systems

5 .

Understand the concept of Spread Spectrum Communication and analyse its role in different applications in communication systems.
