Syllabus

Module-I: Overview: Comparison of EHV AC and DC transmission, DC transmission systems, modern trends in AC and DC transmission. (2 Hrs)
Module-II: Overhead Transmission Line Parameter and Insulators: Bundled conductors, Resistance, Inductance and capacitance calculations of EHV line, Computation of surface voltage gradient on conductors, Insulator performance in polluted environments, mitigation of pollution induced flashover. (7 Hrs)
Module-III: High Voltage Cable Transmission: Underground cables and gas insulated Transmission Line, HV Substation (AIS and GIS), Advantages and Problems Corona: Power loss due to corona, Radio noise and Audible noise and their measurement as well as computation. (6 Hrs)
Module-IV: Lightning Phenomena and its effects on Transmission Line: Lightning Strokes to Lines and its mechanism, Lightning Arresters and Protective Characteristics, Insulation Coordination, Shielding of TL. (3 Hrs)
Module-V: Travelling Wave Theory: Travelling Waves at Power Frequency, Reflection and Refraction of Travelling Waves, Transient Response with Series & Shunt Lumped Parameters, Principles of Travelling-Wave, Lighting and Switching over voltage protection. Grounding of transmission towers and substations. (7 Hrs)
Module-VI: HVDC System: Converter configurations and their characteristics, DC link control, converter control characteristics Monopolar operation, converter with and without overlap, smoothing reactors, transients in DC line, converter faults and protection, HVDC Breakers. Harmonic Filters: design of AC filters, DC filters. (7 Hrs)
Module-VII: Power flow analysis in AC/DC systems: Component models, solution of DC load flow, Parallel operation of HVDC/AC systems, Multi terminal systems. (4 Hrs)

To understand the fundamental concepts of Overhead Transmission Line Parameter and Insulators and High Voltage Cable Transmission.

To understand the concepts of Lightning Phenomena and Travelling Wave Theory.

To understand the basic concepts of HVDC System and Power flow analysis in AC/DC systems.
