Syllabus

Module 1 :

Module I- Intelligent buildings, smart buildings, and building automation:
Intelligent buildings, origin and history of intelligent buildings, smart building.
Module II- Building control systems:
Control theory and practices, control devices, fundamentals of control systems, evolution of direct digital control, control sequence and documentation, application of building control, modern building automation system hardware, software, and networking required for building control systems.
Assignment(s): Exercises on descriptions of building control system
Module III- Artificial lighting controls system:
Introduction to artificial lights, evolution of lamps, luminaire design, purpose of lighting inside building, lighting design layers, smart lights, smart lighting control system, case-study on smart artificial lighting control system.
Assignment(s): Exercises on designing algorithms for lighting control system
Module IV- Daylighting controls system:
Solar altitude and azimuth angle, sun-path analysis, techniques of integration of daylighting inside building, responsive façade design, case-studies on daylighting control system.
Assignment(s): Exercises on designing algorithms for controlling daylight
Module V- Thermal comfort control system:
Automation of shading control system, smart windows, smart opaque surfaces, active means of controlling conductive heat transfer across building envelop, controlling and scheduling of openings for natural ventilation, controlling and scheduling HVAC system.
Assignment(s): Exercises on designing algorithms for thermal comfort
Module VI- Fire alarm and access controls systems:
Fire lifecycle, detection technologies, fire panel technologies, input/output devices, detector & device wiring schema, fireman's telephony & talkback system, guidelines, and fire safety strategies Access control systems, access control technologies, data encryption & security, access control strategy, access controllers, biometrics, barriers, reporting & operations.

Course Objective

To understand the functioning of a building automation system.

2 .

To understand the integration of building environmental controls along with life safety, security, and maintenance functions.

Course Outcome

1 .

1. Ability to integrate smart building control systems in the building design process.
2. Ability to control artificial lighting inside and surrounding the building.
3. Ability to control shading devices to permit required quantities of direct and indirect solar radiation.
4. Ability to control elements on the building envelope to create thermal comfort inside the building.
5. Ability to apply the automation systems inside the building to reduce the risk of spreading fire and enhance safety and security.
