Syllabus

Module I: Introduction to the basics of planning concepts:
Definition and concept of planning, planning objectives, role of planners, approaches to planning, types of plans/planning documents (like regional plan, city plan, zoning plan, and local area plan) evolution of human settlement, definition of urban and rural areas, Census classification of urban settlement, urban-rural continuum, urbanisation, urbanism types of regions and regional planning.

Module II: Classification and hierarchy of settlements:
Morphology of cities, classification of urban settlements based on different criteria, metropolitan concept, the concept of primacy, primate cities, Zipf’s Rank Size Rule hierarchy of settlement – introduction to various theories of planning.
Assignment – Application of Zipf’s Rank Size Rule.

Module III: Evolution of settlement planning concepts:
Settlement planning in history – ancient cities, medieval cities and renaissance cities around the globe, ancient Indian villages and towns, Indian cities post Vedic villages, colonial cities in India Modern planning concepts - Ebenezer Howard’s Garden City, the Geddesian Triad, CA Perry’s neighbourhood unit plan, Radburn layout, Radiant city, and Broadacre city models of urban growth – concentric zone theory, sector theory, multiple nuclei theory, and others, introduction to modern city planning in India Emerging concepts in planning - sustainable development goals, green city, green urbanism, inclusive city Transit-oriented development, smart cities, global cities, agile city.

Module IV: Urban Infrastructure Planning:
National Land Utilisation Policy, land reforms in India, zoning and land use classification, development control rules.
Housing: definitions related to housing, housing policies in India
National Urban Transport Policy, traffic, and transportation – hierarchy of roads, road layouts, types of intersection, basic introduction of LOS Desire line diagrams, threshold analysis,
Social Infrastructure – types, hierarchy and calculation
Physical infrastructure – types and calculation.
Assignment – Calculation of social and physical infrastructure, student presentation on various housing policies in India.

Module V: Techniques in planning processes:
Types of data and data collection methods (primary and secondary), types of data measurement scale – nominal, ordinal, interval, ratio, understanding variables, tabulation and graphic presentation of data
Sampling techniques, types of surveys (e.g., household survey, volume count survey, aerial survey, satellite images, etc.)
Basic analysis – central tendency, Pearson correlation basic population projection.
Assignment – Collection and representation of time series and cross-sectional data, basic population projection.

To familiarize oneself with different domains of planning, planning process and basic techniques.

Ability to design a small neighbourhood or integrated townships.
