Syllabus

Module 1 :

Module I- Building and energy:
Energy consumption in various building types Conventional sources of energy, problems associated with conventional energy sources.
Module II- Climate and building:
Factors affecting climate, climatic zones, and their characteristics Implications of climate on building design Urban climate, microclimate Tools for analysing weather data.
Assignment: Analyse a given site based on the microclimatic factors.
Module III- Principles of energy-conscious design:
Design of building envelope Passive heating and cooling techniques Integration of daylighting.
Assignment: Exploring the various passive design strategies for a given building in a given climatic zone.
Module IV- Energy efficient building design strategies in varied climatic zones in India:
Cold and sunny, cold and cloudy, hot and dry, warm and humid, moderate, and composite climatic zones.
Assignment: Exploring the various building design features used in various buildings in varied climatic zones of India.
Module V- Design guidelines for energy-efficient architecture:
General recommendations
Specific guidelines for commercial, industrial, and residential buildings in a hot and dry, warm and humid, moderate, composite, cold and cloudy climate, cold and sunny climate
Integration of emerging technologies- renewable energy technologies, promotional incentives, conservation measures.

Course Objective

1 .

To identify energy demand in the building sector.

2 .

To develop an understanding of various climatic zones of India and identify appropriate design strategies for these climatic zones.

3 .

To learn and apply the knowledge of passive cooling and passive heating strategies for indoor built environments.

Course Outcome

1 .

1. Ability to develop an understanding of energy requirements across various phases of building construction, maintenance, and operation.
2. Ability to identify objectives and strategies of building design in varied climatic zones.
3. Ability to apply various passive techniques for heating and cooling in buildings.
